Welcome
to the new Vancouver Dance Theatre's website!
Vancouver Dance Theatre was established in 1976. Over the past thirty-two years, thousands of dancers have participated in the Theatre's productions (see the list of participating studios.) The annual holiday production is the Nutcracker.
VDT also does a Spring Show and it is something different every year.
Vancouver Dance Theatre shall foster education consistent with Article IX of the Washington State Constitution by fostering participation in and appreciation for the dance arts on the part of all persons without distinction or preference as to race, color, creed or sex.

Nutcracker December 3-7, 2008
What appears as a fairy-tale of a young girl's magical dream began as a morbid
story filled with dark undertones. E.T.A. Hoffman, the author of "The Nutcracker
and the Mouse King" never intended this story to be for children, as his words
portrayed a bleak view of humanity and relationships. Published in 1816,
Hoffman's tale would undergo revision by Alexander Dumas, eliminating much
bitterness to adapt the tale as a children's story. The new version was read
with interest by Marias Petipa, the senior ballet master of the Russian Imperial
Ballet, who commissioned Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky to compose a score for the
full length "Nutcracker" production. The story would later be simplified (but
the music left intact) and was created as a holiday tale that has lasted
generations. |
